2008 USATF/USOC Emerging Elite Coaches Throws Camp Information

The USATF/USCO High Performance group is proud to announce that it will once again be hosting an Emerging Elite Coaches Throws Coaching Camp this summer. The camp will take place from July 12-16 at the Arco U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California. The camp if for high school, college, and club level coaches that have coached individual state, national, and/or world champions, outdoor national, and/or world qualifiers. Coaches can expect an intensive course study and application taught by some of USATF?s top clinicians. Additionally, USATF and USOC will pay for all costs except travel.

Training DVDs

After 30 years throwing the hammer, participating in four Olympic Games, winning an Olympic medal, setting seven world records, and 20 years coaching youngsters from age 10 to adult Olympic competitors, I have compiled on three DVDs and one CD the most effective hammer throw coaching and training information I have used during my 54-year hammer throwing odyssey.

If you wish to procure this information, you can do so by contributing to the advancement of American youth hammer throwing through a check or credit card authorization made out to USATF Youth Hammer Throw Fund.  By clicking on "Order" you can download the contribution order form and mailing instructions.

Allproceeds to this fund go to the USATF Youth Hammer Throw Training Grants Program to assist annually American boys and girls 17 years of age or younger with travel and lodging costs to hammer throw competitions, hammer throw instructional camps or clinics, and the cost of hammer throw training equipment.

Assistance Requested: Youth Hammer Throw Training Grants

This year the USATF Youth Hammer Throw Fund will award training grants to the nation's outstanding male and female youth hammer throwers. However, your help is needed. The award amount for each grant will be determined by the fund's balance in May and by the number of athletes selected by the Grants' Committee. Detailed application submission guidelines, applicant qualifications and the specific purposes for which training grant funds may be used will be posted within the next two weeks. In the meantime the primary task in April will be raising donations to increase the USATF Youth Hammer Throw Fund balance for the grants. The following documents will tell you how you can help.

Statue of Harold Connolly dedicated

On December 10, 2005, Boston mayor Thomas Menino and several other spulic officials gathered for the dedication of the Harold Connoly Tribute sculpture in the neighborhood of Brighton. The sculpture was made by artist Pablo Eduardo. To see a larger image of the statue, click the photo to the right. A link with more information about the dedication is also available below.

New Hammer Throw Coach's Manual Released

After helping many coaches and athletes over the past several years, Harold Connolly has released an updated version of his guide to help coach beginners in the hammer throw. The manual also has an accompanying handbook for beginning throwers.
